Hello! My name is Katie Williams, and I am excited to introduce myself as a candidate for the USD231 School Board Position 3. I am currently serving as an appointed member of the school board since 2021 and am a former educator with a passion for helping students reach their full potential. As a devoted mother to my own child who attends USD231, I have a personal stake in ensuring that our district provides the best education possible.
I have lived in Johnson County for 13 years, and for eight and a half of those years, I have been proud to call Gardner my home. Over the years, I have seen the district grow and change, and I believe that I possess the knowledge and experience to continue making a positive impact on our beloved district.
Throughout my career in education and as a parent, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that our students, teachers, and administrators face on a daily basis. As a school board member, I am committed to ensuring that our district provides a safe, nurturing, and challenging learning environment for all students. I believe that every child deserves access to a quality education that prepares them for success in college, career, and life.
If elected, I will work tirelessly to improve communication between the school board and the community, advocate for the needs of our students and teachers, and ensure that our district is fiscally responsible. I am committed to making decisions that are in the best interests of our students and our community.
Board Experience
As a dedicated school board member, I have served on several committees, including the SPED, Ed Services, Safety and Wellness, Book Review, Community Outreach, and the committee reorganization team.
My experience has been enriched by participating in countless meetings and discussions aimed at improving our school district's budgets, policies, and strategic planning. I have also had extensive involvement in the hiring process of a new Superintendent, ensuring that our district continues to have strong leadership.
As part of my commitment to supporting our school, I have volunteered for various school functions and worked closely with student-led clubs, including STUCO, to foster a sense of community and inclusivity.
Above all, I am passionate about improving the quality of education for all students in our district. I am constantly striving to ensure that our policies and initiatives align with this mission. I am committed to supporting the well-being and success of all students, schools, and community members, and I am proud to bring my experience and passion to the table as a school board member.
My Vision
As a current member and candidate of the school board, I am passionate about bringing positive change and creating a better future for students, especially those in the special education program. My priority is to bring art back to elementary schools as I believe it plays a crucial role in the development of a well-rounded student. Not only does it foster creativity and self-expression, but it also allows students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Furthermore, I am committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students. As a parent and former educator myself, I understand the importance of ensuring that students feel safe and supported in their learning environment. I am dedicated to working with teachers, parents, and the community to implement programs and policies that address issues such as bullying and the scarcity of resources once outside of our school walls.
Additionally, I believe that supporting teachers is critical to reducing turnover and improving the overall quality of education. Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and we must provide them with the training, resources, and support they need to succeed. This includes addressing issues such as workload and compensation, as well as investing in ongoing professional development.
Ultimately, my goal is to work collaboratively with others to improve the education system and create a better future for all students. I am confident that my passion, experience, and commitment to education make me the ideal candidate for the school board. Thank you for considering me for this important role.
